Success Stories

The City of Tucson was awarded a Brownfields Economic Redevelopment Initiative grant (Pilot grant) in May 1997 which served as the foundation for the City's highly-successful Brownfields Program. The Brownfields Economic Redevelopment Initiative was designed to empower states, communities, and other stakeholders in economic redevelopment to work together in a timely manner to prevent, assess, safely cleanup, and sustainably reuse Brownfields.

The accomplishments completed using Pilot grant funding have included:

  • Completed a regulatory database search, conducted a search of the county assessor's records of all properties in the Pilot area, collected available historic records, and completed the database for the initial Pilot project area.
  • Conducted community outreach efforts, including creation of a Pilot brochure, preparation of a newsletter, and gathering stakeholder views on redevelopment of the Warehouse Arts District and Rio Nuevo South sites.
  • Completed eleven Phase I Environmental Site Assessments (ESA), with two in process, and completed one Phase II ESA, with another in process.

Experience with the Tucson Pilot has been a catalyst for related activities, including the following:

  • Redevelopment activities have been completed or are underway at many sites throughout the Rio Nuevo District.
  • The City is an integral part of the Arizona Municipality Team assisting in Brownfields policy development and increasing the number of Brownfields programs in Arizona.
  • The City received the prestigious Phoenix Award for 2004 in EPA Region 9 for the Rio Nuevo North Redevelopment Project.
  • The City has been an active participant and presenter at many Brownfields-related conferences and seminars including the National Brownfields Conference, EPA Tri-Regional Brownfields Conference, National Brownfields Job Training Conference, City of Phoenix Brownfields University, and many others.
